Dr. Brandé Flamez, a faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service, was featured in “Putting Her Money Where Her Heart Is” in Counseling Today (November 2012). The article details how she donated the money she received as the recipient of the 2012 Wrenn Award to a primary school for students with disabilities in Tanzania. The Corpus Christi, Texas, resident is also a counselor at the Antonio E. Garcia Arts and Education Center, where she supervises the life enhancement and academic direction program, which provides services and behavioral interventions to at-risk students.
Dr. Stacee Reicherzer, a faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service, will present a roundtable discussion titled “Transgender Researcher-Transgender Participants: Examining Research Issues of Power and Privilege Within a Gender-Marginalized Community” at the 2013 European Conference on Politics and Gender (ECPG) in Barcelona, Spain, in March.

Dr. Savitri Dixon-Saxon, associate dean in the School of Counseling and Social Service, wrote “Balance Life and Work While Getting an Education Online” in ExpertBeacon on Sept. 27, to offer tips to adults who are interested in returning to school but need to balance their family life, work schedule, and education.
Dr. Brandé N. Flamez, a faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service, recently received the 2012 Molly Gerold Human Rights Award from the Texas Counseling Association in recognition of training she completed to address human rights in Tanzania. The award honors members who have played an active role in addressing human rights and bringing visibility to the counseling profession.

Dr. Glenda P. Reynolds, a faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service, was recently appointed to the Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling (ABEC) by Gov. Robert Bentley. ABEC is a regulatory agency comprising representatives of licensed professional counselors, counselor educators, and the public. Its mission is to protect the public from incompetent, unethical, and unlawful counseling practice and to enforce qualification standards for all levels of licensure.

The seed money will help the group research the impact of drum circle participation on the personal development of counseling students.

Dr. Edward Beck, a faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service and the founder and president emeritus of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, was named the honorary vice president of ZAKA, an international humanitarian search-and-rescue organization based in Israel that sends volunteers to natural disasters, man-made tragedies, and terrorism incidents.

Dr. Gregory Hickman, a faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service, co-authored Do Children Drop Out of School in Kindergarten? (R&L Education, 2011). The book examines how the national agenda needs to change to adequately address the dropout problem long before kids enter high school.
Dr. Savitri Dixon-Saxon, associate dean in the School of Counseling and Social Service, was featured in the media three times in September. She provided tips on pursuing higher education later in life and finding the balance between family, work, and education on Healthyaging.net (Sept. 1, 2011). As part of a radio media tour with 16 stations across the country, Dr. Dixon-Saxon was cited on Jacksonville’s WJCT-FM Florida Talks blog for her interview on working adults returning to school (Sept. 14, 2011). She was also interviewed by Imagination Soup about parents advocating for their children at school (Sept. 9, 2011).
