First-Time Teacher Scholarship

The First-Time Teacher Scholarship is available for teacher candidates who have an entrance GPA of 3.0 or higher and who enroll by Monday, April 14, 2008, in one of Walden’s online state-approved* teacher preparation programs for the semester beginning on April 28, 2008. Up to 20 $1,000 scholarships are available.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must

• Have an entrance GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Limited to the first 20 applicants who meet the criteria
• Be accepted into one of the following teacher preparation programs by Monday, April 14, 2008:
  • Post-baccalaureate programs with a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) option (20 months)
    • Early Childhood Education (Birth–Grade 3)
    • Special Education, Emotional/Behavioral Disorders (K–12)
    • Special Education, Learning Disabilities (K–12)
  • Post-baccalaureate programs alone (16 months)
    • Early Childhood Education (Birth–Grade 3)
    • Special Education, Emotional/Behavioral Disorders (K–12)
    • Special Education, Learning Disabilities (K–12)

*Walden University’s teacher preparation programs are approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching for licensure in Minnesota. Walden’s enrollment advisors can provide individuals with guidelines and other information about licensure. It remains the individual’s responsibility to understand and comply with the out-of-state licensure requirements for the state in which he or she seeks to be licensed.

Applying
To be eligible for the First-Time Teacher Scholarship, complete Walden's online application. There is no scholarship application form; only the completed application for admission packet is necessary to be eligible for the scholarship. All teacher candidates will be informed by the university as to whether they will receive the scholarship.

Disbursement
All teacher candidates will be notified about whether or not they will receive the First-Time Teacher Scholarship during the week of April 21, 2008. Funding of this scholarship will be disbursed in two parts starting after May 6, 2008, pending clearance of official transcript holds on record with the Office of Admissions.

The first installment of $500 will be disbursed in the teacher candidate’s first term (summer 2008) and the second installment of $500 will be disbursed in the candidate’s second term (fall 2008).

If at any given time a scholarship disbursement exceeds the cost of tuition, funds will be disbursed only in the amount of the tuition cost. The remaining balance of the scholarship will continue to disburse in the amount of $500, and any remaining funds will be applied that following term. Teacher candidates who withdraw from the program or university or change to another program will forfeit the scholarship.
