The Walden University Doctoral Studies Scholarship is available for new Ph.D. and Ed.D. students across the university and is designed to increase the number of practicing scholars who will produce research to solve problems in their professions and directly implement solutions to important societal issues. Walden is offering 100 need-based scholarships for new students in its doctoral programs. The scholarships are awarded in increments of $2,000, renewable for up to $10,000.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must

• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
• Be a newly accepted (never have attended a doctoral program at Walden) and enrolled full-time (6 credits per quarter/semester) doctoral student
• Start your program before the end of June 2007
• File a 2006–2007 FAFSA no later than
  • March 26, 2007, for the April 2, 2007, start date
  • April 23, 2007, for the April 30, 2007, start date
• File a 2007–2008 FAFSA no later than
  • May 28, 2007, for the June 4, 2007, start date
  • June 18, 2007, for the June 25, 2007, start date
• Demonstrate financial need with an expected family contribution (EFC) of $1,800 or less as determined by the 2006–2007 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
• Have all of your official transcripts on file with the Office of Admissions by the FAFSA deadlines above
• Complete the financial aid application (e.g., supply additional information required by the U.S. Department of Education, document your citizenship, clear up defaulted loans)
• Meet standards for satisfactory academic progress set forth by the Office of Financial Aid

Applying
The U.S. Department of Education’s process for determining your expected family contribution (EFC) is very complex and requires that you first complete the FAFSA. Walden representatives cannot determine your EFC or tell you whether you meet the needs-based eligibility criteria until you have completed the FAFSA and received a Student Aid Report.

1. Have all your official transcripts on file in the Office of Admissions and complete a

• 2006–2007 FAFSA no later than
  • March 26, 2007, for the April 2, 2007, start date
  • April 23, 2007, for the April 30, 2007, start date
    
• 2007–2008 FAFSA no later than
  • May 28, 2007, for the June 4, 2007, start date
  • June 18, 2007, for the June 25, 2007, start date
    

2. Receive a Student Aid Report from the U.S. Department of Education. This report includes your expected family contribution (EFC).

3. If your EFC is $1,800 or less, and if you meet the other scholarship criteria and there are still scholarship funds available, it will appear on your award notification from the Office of Financial Aid among your financial aid options.

4. Complete the verification process by submitting a signed copy of your 2005 federal tax return (all pages) and the 2006–2007 Independent Verification Worksheet to the Office of Financial Aid within 10 days of receiving your scholarship notice.

If you do not have a copy of your tax return, you may request a copy of your “Tax Transcript” by calling the IRS at 800-829-1040 (select option 5 and ask to be transferred to accounting). To expedite receipt of the Tax Transcript, request that the Tax Transcript be faxed to you. If you want to have the Tax Transcript mailed directly to you or Walden University, expect it to take at least 10 days. Please be sure to include your signature on any tax documents you send to the Office of Financial Aid.

Awards are disbursed on a first-come, first-served basis, so complete your 2006–2007 FAFSA today.

Disbursement
The scholarship will be awarded in increments of up to $2,000 disbursed evenly across the three terms in your financial aid award year (nine months for quarter-based programs), up to $10,000 total. The scholarship terminates at the completion of your program. Unused funds are not transferred to the student.

Students who take a leave of absence for an entire quarter forfeit the scholarship amount for that quarter. They may not add forfeited scholarship funds to another quarter. Students who withdraw from the university or change to a program other than a doctoral program will forfeit the scholarship.

Renewal
This scholarship must be renewed each financial aid award year (every nine months for quarter-based programs). To renew the scholarship you must

• Be enrolled full time (6 credits per quarter/semester) in a doctoral program
• File a FAFSA at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the financial aid award year for which you are seeking renewal
• Continue to have an expected family contribution (EFC) of $1,800 or less as determined through the FAFSA process and listed on your Student Aid Report
• Meet standards for satisfactory academic progress set forth by the Office of Financial Aid
