“Walden has reframed the deeper context of higher education—the structure, function, mission, and ways of doing things—into a new template for our society that has been imprinted unconsciously in each of you. On one level, the Walden educational model breaks away from traditional institutional constraints of time, place, and space. While on another level, it reflects a major shift from the traditional educational model imported from Europe centuries ago that favors disengaging academic work from social needs, toward a model that reestablishes our obligations for the application of knowledge with civic engagement.”
Dr. Roberto A. Ibarra delivered the commencement address and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Dr. Ibarra’s 30 years of service in education includes teaching and administrative roles from Head Start to graduate programs, as well as serving on the Walden Board of Directors for 10 years. |
