Walden University Now Offers Bachelor’s Degrees in Communication and in Criminal Justice

Minneapolis—April 27, 2009—Walden University is offering new B.S. in Communication and B.S. in Criminal Justice programs that will help students acquire the skills they need to meet the growing demand for expertise in fields such as new media and homeland security.

B.S. in Communication

The B.S. in Communication program in Walden’s School of Management addresses the need across all industries for professionals with strong communication skills in today’s global information society. Students can choose from six concentrations: Marketing Communication, New Media, Online Work and Communities, Organizational Communication, Public Relations and Self-Designed.

Core courses focus on self-discovery and self-improvement, enabling students to assess their own communication styles and enhance their professional growth and development with topics that include interpersonal communication, group and organizational communication, and communication and thought. To meet the growing demand for expertise in new media and online communication, the program offers courses such as Computer-Mediated Communications, Web 2.0 Systems and Applications, and Mass Communications Using New Media.

“The Future of Communications” Webinar Marks Program Launch

On Wednesday, May 6, at 3 p.m. Eastern time, Walden will celebrate its new B.S. in Communication program with a lively online discussion about the world of public relations, corporate communications and Web 2.0. The webinar will feature several experienced leaders in these fields, including Courtney M. Barnes, author, editor of PR News and co-founder/principal of Think Communications; Mike McDougall, APR, vice president of corporate communications and public affairs for Bausch & Lomb; Irene Monley, ABC, global human resources communications at Tyco Electronics and chair of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Research Foundation; and Dr. Henry Brashen, founder of Clear and Effective Communications and the host of this webinar. B.S. in Criminal Justice

The B.S. in Criminal Justice program in Walden’s School of Public Policy and Administration is designed to prepare students for entry-level, mid-career or higher-level positions in law enforcement, the courts, corrections, homeland security and social services. The program features a curriculum based on the recommendations of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences to help students become a social change agent in criminal justice organizations at the local, state, or federal levels.

Students in the B.S. in Criminal Justice program can choose from five concentrations: Computer Information Systems and Security, Crime and Criminals, Criminal Justice Management and Administration, Homeland Security and Human Services for Criminal Justice. Courses cover topics and current challenges facing criminal justice professions, such as drugs, gangs, organized crime, weapons of mass destruction, computer forensics, and profiling serial and mass murderers. Through lifelike, computer-generated scenarios of crime scenes, students have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the crime assessment process.
