This webinar, co-sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College, featured Dr. O’Banion; Gerardo de los Santos, league president and CEO; and Steven Johnson, president of Sinclair Community College. These community college experts discussed this national initiative to double the country’s certificate and associate degree holders by 2020.

Words Hurt: Understanding and Coping with the Bully and the Bullied
Walden invites you to view the Walden On-Demand Webinar of Dr. Colleen R. Logan and Dr. Karen Wiggins, “Words Hurt: Understanding and Coping with the Bully and the Bullied.”

Topics included:

• The evolution of bullying in the 21st century, including cyberbullying.
• The factors that contribute to the development of bullies.
• Why and how individuals are targeted by bullies.
• Signs that a person is bullying or being bullied.

Dr. Logan, Dr. Wiggins, and Dr. Williams also shared coping strategies and tactics for those impacted by bullying, including victims, parents, and educators.

About the presenters:

Dr. Colleen R. Logan is program coordinator of the M.S. in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling program in the School of Counseling and Social Service at Walden. Dr. Logan served as the president of the American Counseling Association from 2008–2009 and has been recognized for her contributions to the field of counseling as well as her leadership in promoting social justice through a focus on advocacy and equal rights.

Dr. Karen Wiggins is a professor at Walden and coordinator of the Elementary Reading and Literacy (Grades PreK–6), Literacy and Learning in the Content Areas (Grades 6–12), and Adolescent Literacy and Technology (Grades 6–12) specializations in the M.S. in Education (M.S.Ed.) program. Prior to working at Walden, Dr. Wiggins served in a number of positions, including elementary school counselor. She has presented numerous workshops on bullying and set up peer mediation programs at both the elementary and middle school levels.

Dr. Janet Williams is the director of the Office of Field Experience, supporting teacher and principal licensure candidates at Walden. Dr. Williams has worked in higher education as an associate dean at New Orleans University; within the Louisiana Department of Education; and as a principal, assistant principal, and teacher in Florida, Hawaii, Colorado, and Louisiana. As an educational leader, she has been involved with the No Place for Hate and anti-bullying initiatives at Rangeview High School in Aurora, Colo. Dr. Williams was recently a featured speaker along with students in Rangeview’s Student Diversity Alliance at state and regional conventions in the Denver area.

Circle of Friends: Creating Peer Communities of Support for Kids with Social and Behavioral Challenges 
Walden invites you to view the archived presentation of Mary Schlieder’s Walden On-Demand Webinar, “Circle of Friends: Creating Peer Communities of Support for Kids with Social and Behavioral Challenges.” During this webinar, Schlieder, a student in Walden’s Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, addressed some of the challenges teachers face when working with students who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder (ADD), sensory processing disorders, and other conditions that affect social and emotional development.

For these children, making friends and understanding social connections is an everyday challenge. School can be a lonely, scary place, and teachers often struggle with how to help. Schlieder presented her program, “Circle of Friends,” and explained how teachers can implement a peer mentoring system to create a supportive school community for students with social challenges.
