Ph.D. in Education Learning Formats
The Ph.D. in Education program provides you with a foundational experience to help you clarify your academic goals and prepare you to pursue them. You will receive instruction and training in the research process throughout your program, as well as the guidance of a faculty committee for your dissertation research. Benchmarks are set throughout the program to help you monitor your progress and organize your program of study. The Ph.D. in Education program offers you three ways to learn, depending on the specialization you choose:
Course-Based Format NEW
This option is a structured program of study comprising online courses and residencies and culminating in a dissertation. As a student, you will work with a faculty mentor and follow a specific plan for completion of your degree. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with peers and faculty members through online discussions and residencies.
Knowledge Area Module (KAM)-Based Format
In addition to attending residencies, you will complete faculty-guided independent research through Walden’s signature Knowledge Area Modules (KAMs) with this option. The KAM-based format allows you to study independently while working with a faculty mentor to complete scholarly papers and study topics that reflect your interests and help you prepare for the dissertation process.
Mixed-Model Format NEW
This option combines online courses, residencies, and KAMs to provide a flexible program of study. You will have the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor, study and conduct research on topics that interest you, and learn from peers and faculty members through online courses.
All three formats offer you the opportunity to reach a significant and highly respected milestone in your professional career—a Ph.D.—while helping you understand the theories, concepts, and techniques that can broaden your skills. Compare formats and determine which one may be best for you.
