Ph.D. Faculty Roles

The School of Management at Walden University features a distinguished faculty of scholars, researchers, and established business leaders from a variety of fields and industries—experts who share a commitment to teaching based on current application. Through the university’s flexible online learning model, you have access to a breadth of faculty expertise, regardless of your location.

In addition, our faculty members are here to support you in pursuing research topics of your choice. Unlike other universities where students support faculty research, our learning model is student-driven and better suited to meet the needs of established, working professionals with significant years of experience. Based on challenges and issues faced in your work history, you can collaborate with faculty members to choose your subject matter and, ultimately, your own area of expertise.

The Many Faces of Our Faculty

Our faculty members serve as your personal guides throughout your doctoral studies. They work with you as you identify and formulate your questions, seek out ways of finding answers to those questions, and connect what you learn in the program to your organization and profession. They become your partner, coach, and valued colleague.

Faculty as Mentor

You are assigned a faculty mentor based on your academic, research, and professional interests. This mentor provides you with the personal support and expert advice to help you achieve success from your first research project through the completion of your dissertation. Prior to starting any research project, you will complete a Learning Agreement with your faculty mentor to define learning objectives. Your mentor will recommend relevant resources and evaluate your work.

Faculty as Assessor

As you progress through your program, you will have the opportunity to work with additional faculty members whose expertise matches your specific research area or specialization. They work in collaboration with your faculty mentor to give you a rich and diverse mixture of perspectives and knowledge, resulting in a more comprehensive learning experience.

Faculty as Partner: Dissertation Committee

Your dissertation committee will be composed of faculty members you have selected for their expertise related to your research topic and their knowledge of research methodology. Committee members guide you through your dissertation proposal, research and analysis, and your final oral presentation as well as provide support all along the way.
