Meet the Associate Dean, Dr. Sara Torres

Dr. Sara Torres was appointed associate dean of the School of Nursing in the College of Health Sciences in January 2008. Before joining Walden University, she served as dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and as associate professor and chair of the School of Nursing’s Department of Behavioral and Community Health at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Torres is nationally recognized for her research on interpersonal violence. She conducted one of the first national comparative studies of Hispanic women’s attitudes toward domestic violence and has received funds from the National Institutes of Health for various research projects on domestic violence. She is the co-author of the book Hispanic Voices: Hispanic Health Educators Speak Out, endorsed by the National League for Nursing.

A commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves, she has received the Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medal and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses’ Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rhode Award for Academic Excellence. Dr. Torres is also a former director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center on Mental Health Nursing at the University of Maryland and has served at the national level with the American Nurses Association, the American Academy of Nursing, and the National League for Nursing.

Dr. Torres received her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, her Master of Science in mental health/psychiatric nursing from Adelphi University, and her Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Texas.
