Join us at one of the nation’s top professional development conferences for educators. This two-day event focusing on the theme “Where Knowledge Meets Inspiration”
will highlight the areas of English Language Arts; Instructional Technology; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); Social Studies; and Whole School Issues. The conference is known for its extraordinary speakers, and we are pleased to announce that several Walden speakers will share their expertise with the attendees:
- Honorable Richard W. Riley, the former U.S. Secretary of Education and governor of South Carolina for whom our college is named, will discuss “Transforming Schools for the 21st Century” in one of the main plenary panel sessions
- Dr. J. Ana Donaldson, contributing faculty, Ph.D. in Education program with a specialization in Educational Technology, will join other experts for a lively discussion on the National Education Technology Plan.
- Dr. Casey Reason, part-time faculty, Ph.D. in Education program, will talk about teacher leadership as it relates to change, collaboration, and brain research.
- Dr. Barbara Weschke, program director, M.S. in Education, reading specializations, will engage you in an interactive session on how to help your students demonstrate reading comprehension and fluency.

Presenter: Dr. Barbara Weschke, program director, M.S. in Education, reading specializationsTopic: Not Your Grandmother’s Book Report: Engaging and Effective Activities to Help Your Students Demonstrate Reading Comprehension and Fluency
Time: 8:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 2:30 p.m.

Description: Students of teachers who graduated from Walden’s M.S. in Education program with a specialization in Elementary Reading and Literacy (PreK–6) had gains in reading fluency that were on average 4.8 words per minute or 14% greater than students of non-Walden-master’s educated teachers, according to a 2009 independent study in the Tacoma Public Schools (Washington). Learn how this research has demonstrated the effectiveness of Walden’s curriculum, and experience activities from our reading curriculum firsthand to help improve your students’ comprehension and fluency.

Presenters: Richard W. Riley, the former U.S. Secretary of Education and governor of South Carolina for whom The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership is named, will join the current U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan after his remarks, for a candid discussion on U.S. education. During their plenary session, the two Secretaries will look at where the country is today and where we are heading under the new ESEA and initiatives like Race to the Top and the Common Core of Standards.Topic: Transforming Schools for the 21st Century

Description: Many of our practices in schools unintentionally discourage collaboration and creativity. Deep change and transcendent innovation, however, can require teachers to collaborate at new levels of effectiveness with colleagues nearby and at a distance. Casey Reason, author of the new book Leading a Learning Organization: The Science of Working With Others, will explore some of these trends and the impact they can have in bringing new levels of innovation and effectiveness to the classroom.

Description: Innovations in brain research provide important clues as to how teachers can more comprehensively stimulate learning. In this session, Casey Reason, author of the new book Leading a Learning Organization: The Science of Working With Others, examines several simple but transcendent brain-research fundamentals and applies them to the skills teacher-leaders need to stimulate deeper learning in both the students they serve and in their colleagues’ continuous quest to improve teacher-led learning communities.
